Steve worked as a wildlife veterinarian in several zoos, wildlife rehabilitation centres and conservation projects in Australia, Thailand and Cameroon before joining Chester Zoo as veterinary officer (2003-2018). He is a recognised specialist in Zoo Health Management as a Diplomate of the European College of Zoological Medicine. He was the veterinary coordinator for the Pan African Sanctuary Alliance veterinary programme (2006 – 2014) and co-created the Orangutan Veterinary Advisory Group in 2009, where he continues to facilitate and participate. Both these organisations focus on and promote capacity building of local primate and wildlife veterinarians. 

Steve also sits on the IPS ad-hoc committee on primate remote capture, is a member of the IUCN CPSG, is the vet advisor for the Sulawesi macaque EEP and is part of the PASA One Health Initiative. He currently works as a consultant for Wildlife Impact and as a lecturer in biosystems and environmental change at the University of Birmingham.
