About the Conservation Grants
The Conservation Subcommittee administers the PSGB Conservation Grants. These are awards, typically not exceeding £1,250, to assist work of direct benefit to primate conservation and primate conservation education. The remit is very broad and although the financial value of the grants is quite small it should be remembered that approval from the PSGB is invaluable when applying for money from other sources.
These small grants may support projects that address known threats to primate populations, or known constraints on population recovery; projects that shift incentives in support of conservation (e.g. training; education and awareness-raising; compensation schemes; policy influence); surveys that will direct conservation effort to important locations; conservation education relevant to primates; and other research of direct benefit to primate conservation.
Candidates should not apply to more than one Subcommittee for funds for the same project or in any one year, but decide which best represents their chosen topic. For further clarification please see the guidance notes and, if unsure, contact the relevant Convenor(s) for advice prior to submitting a proposal.
In addition, PSGB, through CSC, awards funds from other organisations or individuals:
Born Free Foundation
CSC also manages a grant of £1,500 from the Born Free Foundation. This grant is mostly targeted at projects which support a primate range-state national, working in the field on a project involving endangered primates or human/non-human primate conflict resolution. Applicants for this grant apply as for a PSGB grant, through the same channels, and any project selected by members of the Conservation Sub-Committee as being suitable for BFF will be passed to BFF for acceptance. This grant will be awarded in March, not in November.
Trentham Monkey Forest
Trentham Monkey Forest will, as of 2022, be providing £2500 each year to be awarded to applicants for conservation grants. The fund will be split at the discretion of the CSC members; it is unlikely to be given in total to one person. Please apply as normal to the CSC.
Applying for funds
PSGB Grants are open to PSGB members and to primate range state nationals who are not members. Range state nationals that are successful with a grant application will be given free PSGB membership for the duration of their grant.
We have introduced two funding rounds to all our grants as of 2023. The 2024 deadlines are March 1st and November 1st. The next deadline is March 1st 2024.
All applications should be written in English and submitted directly to the Convenor ([email protected]). DO NOT use the convenor's personal email as that address will not be monitored. References are confidential and should be submitted and uploaded directly by the referee, not the applicant. All emails will normally be acknowledged promptly.
Applicants are advised to read the Code of Best Practices for Field Primatology by the International Primatological Society if they are planning to undertake field work.
