It is with great sorrow that we must announce the death of Dr. Ymke Warren, who was tragically killed at her home in Limbe, Cameroon on June 29th. Her research included work on mountain gorillas in Rwanda (gaining an MSc on this work from University College London) and PhD research on olive baboons at Gashaka Gumti National Park in Nigeria, with Roehampton University. Ymke was also instrumental in setting up the Gashaka Primate Project with colleagues at University College London and Roehampton University. Her habituation of the Gashaka baboons has led to long-term research, with these animals still being studied 10 years on. Her recent work with Wildlife Conservation Society in Cameroon focused on conservation of Cross River gorillas.
Ymke worked tirelessly and helped many students to embark on a career in conservation. She was a valuable member of our academic community, a great believer in conservation and most of all a good and greatly trusted friend to many of us. Some memories of her can be read at the site set up in her memory (and you can also add your own tributes here) http://www.4apes.com/ymke/
We send our condolences to her partner Aaron, her parents and all her family and friends.
