The NewMoon Program V1.0 The purpose of NewMoon is to compute daily astronomical phenomena and then to utilize these values to calculate other daily variables. NewMoon is a useful tool for the planning of leisure activities such as fishing, hunting, hiking etc. where lighting conditions may be of importance. However, New Moon was originally aimed primarily at biologists interested in the effect of physical environmental cueing mechanisms on circadian activity rhythms (24h), circannual activity rhythms such as seasonality (variation within 1 year), but potentially also cyclicity (variation between years). The most important cueing mechanism is the light-dark cycle, which is known to entrain circadian rhythms and to trigger seasonality in both animals and plants. Activity levels in animals that are partially or completely nocturnal are often linked to the intensity of nocturnal illumination, which is dependent on the phase of the moon. NewMoon is of particular relevance to field biologists planning or carrying out work in remote areas where access to library and World Wide Web resources may be impossible or impractical, but can also be employed during data analysis after field work has been completed, or for research on animals in a captive setting in outdoor enclosures. Furthermore, there is also the potential for generating data for the design of controlled lighting regimes in indoor enclosures. NewMoon is intended for academic or personal use and may not be used for commercial purposes under any circumstances (See Disclaimer). NewMoon has been tested on Windows NT4 and XP plaftforms only. NewMoon is available as a .zip package (360 kb) containing the following files: readme.txt --- this file NewMoon.exe --- the NewMoon program NewMoon.hlp --- HelpFile NewMoon.cnt --- Help contents To install NewMoon, simply unzip to a suitable directory. If access to the help file is required, NewMoon.hlp and NewMoon.cnt must both be installed in the same directory as the executable program. Further information on the program and its functionality are available in the .hlp file Please report bugs and suggestions for additions and improvements to newmoon@rmthomas.org History - NewMoon V1.0 Released 29th September 2003.
