G. Macho: Linking morphology, behaviour and ecology: how reliable are inferences from fragmentary hominin remains

The 2009 PSGB spring meeting will be held on 16 & 17th April 2009 at Bournemouth University. The theme of the talks by invited speakers is "Form and Function", in which we will explore the links among morphology, behaviour and ecology: ABSTRACTS here .

We wish particularly to encourage postgraduate students and those early in their career to present but anybody is welcome to submit an abstract (abstract deadline for talks has passed but poster abstracts will be accepted until 1 April 2009) to registration@psgb.org.

Members and non-members are invited to submit abstracts for poster and oral presentations on any topic of interest to PSGB members.

The PSGB would also like to announce that the first Charles A. Lockwood Student Prize will be awarded at the Spring Meeting in Bournemouth as a way to acknowledge Charlie's time spent on the PSGB Council, as well as the thought, dedication and inspiration he provided to his students. Students please visit our student pages.

We will also have short skills sessions on topics that will be particularly useful for postgraduate students (e.g. "presentation skills", "introduction to morphometrics"). We would like to encourage others to organise short workshops around the meeting - please contact the organisers if you would like to do so (registration@psgb.org).

Free PUBLIC lecture: Darwin with a smile

by Prof Jan A.R.A.M. van Hooff
ABSTRACT

Hosted by Bournemouth University

Prof JARAM van Hooff
Prof Emeritus Jan A.R.A.M. van Hooff from Utrecht University has numerous titles and publications and is the scientific father of a long list of prominent primatologists. He will discuss the evolution of and muscle involvement in the facial expressions of emotion, following in the footsteps of Charles Darwin's work on this topic.
Marwell Zoo will allow meeting attendees to visit the zoo for free. We will organise a coach trip to Marwell Zoo on Saturday 18th April at the cost of the coach.
Marwell Zoo

Keynote speakers:

  • Prof Robin Crompton, University of Liverpool will talk about "Locomotor mechanics of the Laetoli Footprint Makers: evidence from experimental pedobarography and computer simulation". ABSTRACT
  • Prof Robin Dunbar from Oxford University will talk about "Darwin, time and morphology: constraints on sociality in primates and their implications for evolution". ABSTRACT
  • Dr Sarah Elton, Senior lecturer in Anatomy at HYMS Hull and University of York investigates the link between anatomy and ecology. ABSTRACT
  • Prof Emeritus Jan A.R.A.M. van Hooff from Utrecht University will discuss facial expression of emotions, in light of Charles Darwin's bicentennial.
  • Prof Gabriele Macho, University of Bradford, will present "Linking morphology, behaviour and ecology: how reliable are inferences from fragmentary hominin remains?" ABSTRACT .
  • Dr Todd Rae, Senior lecturer at Roehampton University, investigates the importance of phylogenetic relationships in studying anatomical adaptations.ABSTRACT
