Congress of the European Federation for Primatology 2005

Invitation

You are cordially invited to attend the first congress of the European Federation for Primatology (EFP). This congress will be hosted by the German Society for Primatology (GfP), the German Primate Centre (DPZ) and the University of Göttingen from August 9 12, 2005. This meeting will coincide with the 9 th GfP congress.

The EFP is a federation of all national primatological societies and groups in Europe. In order to bring all students and researchers studying primate biology, as well as those using primates as model organisms and those contributing to primate conservation from all over Europe together, the EFP council decided to organise a bi-annual congress to promote discussion and awareness of all aspects of primatology across disciplines and national boundaries.

The need for yet another conference may not be obvious. However, there are well over 1000 European primatologists, who are organized in national societies or groups, as well as many others working with or on primates. It has been difficult for many of them to attend the recent IPS conferences for various reasons, so that the council of the EFP has sensed a need for a forum for discussion of all aspects of primatology that is accessible and affordable for all interested parties. Europe should have the necessary critical mass for a sustainable congress, and it certainly has the necessary diversity of disciplines and scientific excellence to make this an interesting event.

Because this will be the first congress of this kind, it is difficult to estimate the number of potential participants, which in turn hampers logistical preparations. We therefore kindly ask you to pre-register by returning a simple electronic form. We will use this information to plan the meeting according to your needs, and to generate a mailing list that will provide regular updates, as new information becomes available.

We hope that many of you will use this opportunity and help us bring European primatology together and provide it with new momentum by attending this congress.

Looking forward to seeing you in Göttingen in 2005!

Peter Kappeler President of the EFP
